The Playmaker: Johnny Gaudreau
Artist: Chris Tutty
Dimensions: 30 x 40 inches
Medium: Airbrush, Acrylic, and Oil on Canvas
The Playmaker: Johnny Gaudreau by Chris Tutty is a stunning tribute to one of the most electrifying players to ever wear the Calgary Flames jersey. This 30 x 40-inch painting captures the essence of Gaudreau’s dynamic playing style and his special connection to the Flames community.
In the foreground, Gaudreau is depicted in full motion, skating gracefully as if gliding toward an exhilarating play. Rendered in the signature old-school hockey card format, his signature style is frozen in time, radiating energy and finesse. The background evokes the excitement of the rink, with Gaudreau’s presence on the ice adding to the fast-paced momentum of the scene.
This piece also carries personal significance, as the original painting was sold by Elevate Auctions, through Bill Brown, to support local charities. The artist and Gaudreau had bonded over several poker tournaments in support of the Flames Foundation, making this work a cherished symbol of their shared commitment to giving back.
Each Original painting is unique and one of a kind. A great amount of time and detail goes into every piece of art — from hand-painted brush strokes in acrylic and oil mediums to the unique art of airbrushing with only the best paints, including Createx Auto-Air Colors and House of Kolors Automotive Paint.
Aspects of geological layering, almost like sedimentary rock, are imparted through mixed mediums such as metallics, gold and silver flaking, coppers, iron magnesium powders, glass resins, pearls, and industrial candy coats as seen on high-end automobiles. Select masterpieces also incorporate elements of sculpture with molding paste, crackling, and organic material, creating a dimensional embossed image that leaps off the canvas.
With the addition of all these materials and techniques in the Original, you may ask: What does an Artist Proof look like, and how does it differ?
Artist Proofs are painted in the same manner as an Original, with all the techniques mentioned above, with one exception — they begin from a professionally photographed version of the Original. Rob Ryan of Render DC photographs the painting prior to completion, and the file is digitally remastered with a spectrometer and color-balanced.
It is then printed and stretched on canvas to provide a mapping for the new proof, called an archival pigment print. The stretched canvas is then re-airbrushed to retain the true vibrant colors of the Original. Molding paste, pearls, metal flakes, candies, and neon paints are incorporated before being sealed with glass resins.
The Artist Proof equals the Original in quality but has expressive variations. Essentially, it becomes a new painting based on the Original. With a more accessible price point, Artist Proofs allow collectors to own a truly unique work of art at substantial savings.
